Committee on Economic Affairs
30 Oct 2024 Number M20/M/IQ/2024/16
In today's meeting, the committee met with Drives Association of Maldives regarding letter sent by the Drivers Association of Maldives regarding their concerns over introduction of a taxi fleet by the government. In this regard, the association stated that the government's introduction of a taxi fleet would directly and indirectly impact independent taxi service providers. Furthermore, the taxi community's revenues will be affected, and companies that have invested in the sector will be constrained by the government’s decision. They stated that the government’s support is needed to develop the taxi service sector, and they alone cannot work to improve the quality of service provided and requires the support of the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation as well as the Maldives Police Service. Currently, there is no study conduct to find out what are the challenges in providing taxi services, especially within Male' city. They raised their concerns about difficulty for taxis to travel on male' roads, as taxis are not allowed to enter some roads due to vehicles parking issues, and requested to address these issues, to penalize offensive taxi drivers, to amend taxi regulations. Drivers’ association official revealed that they do not intend to create a hurdle for the government's efforts to provide better services to the people. However, requested to understand the losses that could be faced by taxi service providers and individuals and have discussions with them to resolve the issue.
