Summary
In today’s meeting, the Committee reviewed the amendment bills on the Criminal Procedure Code. The Committee reviewed and amended provisions as per the comments received by the Committee.
In this meeting, the Committee decided to reverse its previous decision to amend the proposed provision 61-1 (a) (2) of the bill and unanimously passed it as originally proposed in the bill.
Secondly, the Committee decided to amend the appeal period of 75 days in case of a delay in filing for appeal during the period given was caused by force majeure and if duly proven by the appellant. The Committee saw that the appeal period provided in the Civil Procedure Code for this circumstance is 6 months and therefore decided to amend the period of 75 days to 6 months in the relevant provisions (198-3 (e) and 198-4 (e)) in the bill. This amendment was proposed by MP Anara Naeem of Huraa Constituency. This proposal was seconded by MP Ibrahim Nazil of South Hithadhoo Constituency. This amendment was unanimously passed by the Committee.
The Committee then unanimously passed the 2 amendment bills on Criminal Procedure Code as reviewed and amended by the Committee and decided to compile the 2 amendment bills as one.
