Committee on Economic Affairs
18 Feb 2025 Number M20/M/IQ/2025/3
In this meeting, the committee met with the Villa Air Pvt Ltd officials regarding the issue submitted to the committee about Kaadehdhoo Airport. In this meeting the officials stated that Villa Air Pvt Ltd has undertaken several works in the airport, including fencing of the airport, installation of X-ray machines, installation of new generators and runway repairs. In addition, after being re-handed over to the airport, necessary equipments have been upgraded and it has been in operation till date, and every year an audit or inspection is conducted to determine whether the airport is operating in accordance with the certification standards of the Maldives Civil Aviation Authority. While efforts were underway to develop the airport to meet the standards of an international airport, both parties in discussion for the development of Kaadehdhoo Airport, have backed down due to the government’ announcement to develop an international airport in Gdh. Thinadhoo. The Chairman also stated that if the government wants to take over Kaadehdhoo Airport, they are ready to handover the airport and are ready to discuss the matter with the government. He added that setting up an international airport in the nearby vicinity would not be feasible and the airport would be profitable with a consolidated development to the region. Villa Air Pvt Ltd also noted that Kaadehdhoo Airport is a very old airport and the work on wear and tear is being stalled and action has been taken in the case of employees based on the company's HR policies.
