Summary
The agenda for today’s meeting is to review the issue of the selection of two members from the public to the Police Board by parliament in accordance with Section 75(d) of the Maldives Police Service Act, 2020. When the floor was opened for members, MP Mohamed Nazim of North Maafannu Constituency proposed, and MP Abdulla Shareef of Kelaa Constituency seconded to set the deadline of the issue to 13th March 2025. Also MP Abdulla Shareef of Kelaa Constituency proposed and MP Mohamed Shahid of Hulhudhoo Constituency seconded to conduct the interviews on 12 March 2025. After that, the chair of the committee, MP Ahmed Saleem of Eydhafushi Constituency porposed Assistant Director General, Legal Affairs Dr. Aminath Asfa Shafie, Deputy Director, Legal Affairs Uza. Shiraza Naseer and Legal Officer Mr. Mohamed Harees Haneef as the administrative panel in accordance with Section 223 of the Standing Order to conduct the interview process. Since none of the members objected to the proposal, it was decided to proceed with it.
After that, members discussed the issue of security forces carrying out a special operation related to national security on the night of 10 March 2025. After discussions among the members, it was decided to write to the Maldives Police Service and the Ministry of Defence requesting information related to the operation to the committee.
After that, the committee discussed the ongoing investigation into the smuggling of cigarette cartons on an oil tanker owned by The Hawks Private Limited, which is being reviewed by the committee. MP Abdul Gafoor Moosa of Hanimaadhoo Constituency proposed and MP Mohamed Shahid of Hulhudhoo Constituency seconded the committee members to visit the storage location of where the confiscated cigarette cartons stored by Maldives Customs Service.
