Public Accounts Committee
21 Apr 2025 Number M20/M/ML/2025/17
In today's meeting, the committee had discussions with officials from the Maldives Pension Administration Office and the Civil Service Commission regarding other retirement benefits provided outside of the pension benefits granted under the Retirement Pension Scheme as stipulated in Law No. 8/2009 (Maldives Pension Act).
The officials from Maldives Pension Administration Office raised their concern that there are people who does not want to participate in the retirement pension scheme because of the other retirement benefits provided outside of the pension benefits granted under the Retirement Pension Scheme. Moreover, the official suggested that while abolishing the benefits provided by schemes operated by individual institutions outside of that Retirement Pension Scheme, instead of sudden abolition, moderate solutions need to be found.
Furthermore, the official from the Civil Service Commission noted that some people continue to work in other institutions outside the civil service after retiring from the civil service. The official stated that this is not an acceptable practice under any circumstances, and they believe that a solution to this issue should be found through legislation.
Based on the information shared by the Civil Service Commission and Maldives Pension Administration Office, committee requested to provide a timeline on the work to bring the necessary amendments to the law.
