Summary
The first thing that was discussed in today's meeting was issue referred to the committee by the Union for Employment Agencies of the Maldives raising their concerns regarding Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology’s decision to handover ‘Expat System’ to a Malaysian company and to start providing service through a new system in February 2025. Since the issue is relate to the implementation of policies relating to employment of expatriates in the Maldives under The Employment Act (Law no. 2/2008), it falls under the mandate of Committee on National Security Services. It was clarified to the committee that Article 121 (h) of the Standing Order restricts other committees from investigating matters under the purview of the Committee on National Security Services. After much deliberation among the committee members, South Hulhumale' Constituency Member Dr. Ahmed Shamheed proposed to seek the advice of the Counsel General of the Parliament to determine whether the issue can be addressed within the Committee’s mandate. The proposal was seconded by South Mahchangolhi Constituency Member Musthafa Hussain.
The proposal was passed unanimously.
Next, the committee discussed the issue regarding the registration of vehicles and policies formulated by the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation regarding vehicle registration. The Committee came to an end without deciding anything regarding this matter.
