Government Oversight Committee 6th Meeting of 2025

09 Jul 2025 Number M20/M/SM/2025/06

Summary

The first thing that was discussed in today's meeting was the issue regarding healthcare workers’ overtime payment policies. When the floor was opened, South Hulhumale Constituency Member Dr. Ahmed Shamheed proposed to make a decision on this matter only after the  Joint Committee comprising the Committee on National Development and Heritage and the Committee on Social Affairs is done reviewing “Resolution to find out the views of MPs on the rules for paying overtime work by education workers and health workers and establishing a fair work environment for them.” This proposal was seconded by South Mahchangolhi Constituency Member Musthafa Hussain.

The proposal was passed unanimously.

Secondly, the committee discussed issues related to the Health Services Act (Law No.29/2015) and the Healthcare Professionals Act (Law No. 13/2015), as well as the challenges in accessing commonly used medications. When the floor was opened, Felidhoo Constituency Member Adam Zahir proposed that both matters be referred to the Committee on Social Affairs, as they fall under its mandate. This proposal was seconded by West Henveyru Constituency Member Ali Ibrahim.

The proposal was passed unanimously.

Thirdly, the Committee proceeded with examining the matter regarding F. Magoodhoo Airport, where despite 85% of the construction work being completed and having the necessary materials and personnel available, work has been halted. Felidhoo Constituency Member Adam Zahir proposed to send a letter to the relevant ministry to clarify the date when work can resume, and the estimated date for the airport's opening. This proposal was seconded by South Hulhumale Constituency Member Dr. Ahmed Shamheed.

The proposal was passed unanimously.

Lastly, the Committee reviewed a letter sent by a private individual, outlining the difficulties faced in obtaining assistance from the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) and requesting support for biannual overseas travel for medical treatment. When the floor was opened, South Hulhumale Constituency Member Dr. Ahmed Shamheed proposed to send a letter to the complainant, advising him to raise the matter directly with NSPA. This proposal was seconded by Felidhoo Constituency Member Adam Zahir.

The proposal was passed unanimously.
