Petition Committee

Petitions Committee 11th meeting of the year 2025.

22 Jul 2025 Number M20/M/PT/2025/11

Summary

In today’s meeting, the Committee first reviewed the petition submitted by civil employees of the Maldives Correctional Service. With reference to the discussions held with the Ministry of Finance and Planning and the Maldives Correctional Service, the Committee concluded that the National Pay Commission is currently working on the harmonization of salaries for state employees. This process is being implemented in phases, based on the fiscal capacity of the state. As employees are transitioned into the new pay structure, the concerns raised in the petition are expected to be addressed. Following this conclusion, Vaikaradhoo Constituency Member Hussain Ziyad proposed to inform the petitioners accordingly. The proposal was seconded by Madaveli Constituency Member Mohamed Shameez.

The proposal was unanimously passed by the members present at the meeting.

Then the Committee reviewed the Petition for negligence in receiving statutory benefits for children with disabilities. Madaveli Constituency Member Mohamed Shameez proposed to meet with Minsitry of Health to further review the issues highlighted in the Petition. This was seconded by Hinnavaru Constituency Member Mohamed Abdul Rahman.

The proposal was unanimously passed by the members present at the meeting.

The Committee then reviewed the petition regarding the prolonged and unresolved housing issues related to the K-Park Residencies project. As the People’s Majlis Committee on Housing is currently reviewing a resolution addressing the same concerns raised in the petition, Madaveli Constituency Member Mohamed Shameez proposed to defer the Petition Committee’s review until the Housing Committee concludes its review of the resolution. This proposal was seconded by Ungoofaaru Constituency Member Ibrahim Shifaz. The proposal was unanimously passed by the members present at the meeting.

Lastly the Committee reviewed the Petition calling for a resolution to the challenges faced by students studying in Spain under the government’s student loan scheme. In regard to the petition, Vaikaradhoo Constituency Member Hussain Ziyad proposed to write to the Ministry of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development to obtain up-to-date information on the matter. This was seconded by Komandoo Constituency Member Mohamed Ibrahim.

The proposal was unanimously passed by the members present at the meeting.
