Summary
In today’s meeting, the Committee first extended the deadline for the Resolution submitted to seek the views of Members of the 20th Parliament on the amendments to the Decentralization Act and the challenges encountered in its implementation. North Henveyru Constituency Member Ahmed Aifan proposed to extend the deadline to 30th November 2025. This was seconded by Kolamaafushi Constituency Member Ibrahim Didi.
The proposal was passed unanimously by the members present.
The Committee then reviewed an issue submitted by the Addu Meedhoo Constituency Member Abdul Rahman, concerning the unlawful allocation of a large portion of land in the Addu City Meedhoo Tourism Zone to a private individual without a bidding process. During the meeting, Member Abdul Rahman read the issue aloud for the Committee and submitted two additional matters relating to the Mayor of Addu City Council, Ali Nizar.
The first issue concerned the Mayor’s alleged involvement in extending a land lease in Addu City to a company registered under a relative’s name without due process.
The second related to an agreement signed between the Addu City Council and a private company for the supply of three road sweepers.
After the issues were presented and their details explained by Member Abdul Rahman, the Chair of the Committee called for a vote on whether to accept the issues for consideration by the Committee.
The Committee members unanimously decided to accept the issues for consideration.
Lastly, the Committee discussed how to proceed with the review of the issues concerning the Mayor of Addu City Council. Addu Meedhoo Constituency Member Abdul Rahman, proposed that the Committee request the Anti-Corruption Commission and the Local Government Authority to investigate the matters and submit a report to the Committee. The proposal was seconded by the Kolamaafushi Constituency Member Ibrahim Didi.
The proposal was passed unanimously by the members present.
