Committee Meeting - People's Majlis of Maldives

Summary

In today's meeting, the Committee met with representatives from Maldives Customs Service regarding the service’s proposed budget for 2026 and gathered information about their budget. The Service noted that the amount allocated to them is MVR 19.3 million less than the budget agreed upon with the Ministry of Finance and Planning, and that this amount is insufficient for fulfilling all the responsibilities and duties mandated by Act No. 8/2011 (Maldives Customs Act) and for the administrative operation of the office. Furthermore, the Service highlighted that additional funds are required beyond the currently budgeted amount to fully discharge Custom's legal obligations and to train staffs.

In addition, the Maldives Customs Service noted that to further strengthen the management of Customs Control Areas, they require additional staff to enhance port security, reinforce cargo inspection and clearance processes, increase special operations, and expand enforcement activities. They also highlighted the need for budget allocation to procure container scanning facilities, as well as enforcement and surveillance equipment.
