Committee Meeting - People's Majlis of Maldives

Summary

In this meeting, due to the increasing illegal activities and smuggling in the Customs Controlled Area, discussions were held with officials from Maldives Customs Service and Maldives Ports Limited to gather information about container scanning systems needed by Maldives Customs Service to establish container scanning arrangements at ports to strengthen enforcement measures. Accordingly, Maldives Customs Service informed that once Ministry of Finance and planning provides the budget for the total amount needed to purchase the container scanner and MPL allocates the necessary space at the port for the scanner, the installation work can begin. Although the scanner would be purchased using the Customs budget, ownership would be transferred to MPL.

MPL informed that they are considering a mobile solution for the container scanner that can be relocated as needed, and that when the port is relocated to Thilafushi, a modern system with the latest features will be established there. MPL also noted that due to current budget constraints, they are unable to make significant expenditures on this matter at this time.
