Government Oversight Committee

Government Oversight Committee 9th Meeting of 2025

27 Nov 2025 Number M20/M/SM/2025/09

Summary

In today’s meeting, the Committee discussed a matter submitted by a private party requesting the Committee to assess how effectively the regulations and guidelines made under Law No. 2/2024 (Occupational Health and Safety Act) are being implemented. Following a discussion on the response received from the Ministry of Higher Education, Labour, and Skills Development, it was noted that only one regulation has been published under the Act to date. Central Fuvahmulah Constituency Member Ali Fazad proposed that a letter be sent to the Attorney General’s Office seeking clarification on the reasons for the delay in issuing the remaining regulations. This proposal was seconded by West Henveyru Member Ali Ibrahim.

The proposal was passed unanimously.

Next, the committee discussed a matter submitted by North Galolhu Constituency Member Mohamed Ibrahim, seeking some clarifications from Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation and Maldives Ports Limited regarding the operation of ports that service international vessels. Accordingly, it was decided to proceed with this matter after obtaining further information related to the case from the relevant authorities.

Lastly, during the opportunity opened for committee members to propose issues they wished to raise, Hulhumalé Central Constituency Member Dr. Ahmed Shamheed proposed that due to complaints being received that the salaries and benefits of employees in some sectors have decreased following the changes to the "State Pay Framework," a meeting should be held with officials from the National Pay Commission to clarify the matter.

This proposal was seconded by Central Fuvahmulah Member Ali Fazad.

The proposal was passed unanimously.
