Petition Committee
07 Oct 2026 Number M20/M/PT/2026/11
In today's meeting, the committee discussed the petition "A petition requesting that, following consultation with the relevant institutions, a solution be provided regarding the second amendment made to the Regulations for Qualifying Law Degree Programs, in a manner that exempts students who were already enrolled in the course prior to the amendment” which has met the required signature threshold-2. As this is an e-petition that satisfies the signature requirement specified in Section 257-6(c)(2) of the standing orders of the People’s Majlis, Madaveli constituency member Mohamed Shameez proposed to seek an opinion from the Bar Council of the Maldives regarding the petition. This proposal was seconded by Hithadhoo central constituency member Ahmed Azaan Marzooq. The motion was subsequently passed by the unanimous consensus of the members present and voting at the Committee meeting.
The second petition, titled "Petition calling for the abolition of the premium health insurance scheme provided to Members of Parliament, which is inaccessible to the general public" has secured the necessary signatures to meet Threshold-2 as stipulated in Article 257-6 (c)(2) of the Standing Orders of the People’s Majlis. Since it is an e-petition that satisfies the requirements of Threshold-2, Hithadhoo central Constituency member Ahmed Azan Marzooq, proposed that further debate at the committee stage is unnecessary and that the petition be forwarded for deliberation on the floor of the People’s Majlis. This proposal was seconded by Madaveli Constituency member Mohamed Shameez. The motion was subsequently passed by the unanimous vote of all members present at the committee meeting.
As the last item of today’s meeting, the committee discussed a petition that had received the required number of signatures to meet Threshold-1, titled “Petition calling for the power to recall elected Members of Parliament to be granted to the people” the committee noted that this petition is an e-petition that has received the number of signatures required to meet Threshold-1, as specified under Article 6-257(n)(1) of the Standing Orders of the People’s Majlis, and that it is a very important petition as introducing a “Recall Act” is one of the promises made by the government, Hithadhoo Central constituency Member Ahmed Azan Marzooq proposed sending a letter to the office of Attorney General to inquire whether work is currently being carried out on a Recall Act Bill. The proposal was seconded by Madaveli constituency Member Mohamed Shameez. The proposal was subsequently passed unanimously by the committee members who were present and participated in the vote.
