Regional Unity Emphasized at 5th China-South Asia Cooperation Forum

Kunming, China — In a notable address at the opening ceremony of the 5th China-South Asia Cooperation Forum today, Hon. Ahmed Nazim, Deputy Speaker of the People’s Majlis, highlighted the crucial need for regional unity and collaboration.


Hon. Ahmed Nazim, Deputy Speaker of the People’s Majlis began by expressing his gratitude to the Chinese government and the event organizers for their warm hospitality. He noted that Kunming’s historical role as a hub of trade and cultural exchange serves as a reminder of the profound impact that regional cooperation can have on shared prosperity.


"Today, as we face unprecedented global challenges, the need for unity and collective action is more apparent than ever," Hon. Deputy Speaker Nazim stated. He stressed that the theme of the forum, "Build Consensus for Regional Development," reflects a vital goal for the region.


In his speech, Hon. Nazim emphasized that in an increasingly interconnected and volatile world, regional growth and prosperity depend on the ability to work together and build bridges of understanding. He warned against unilateral actions that can impede regional development and heighten tensions, advocating instead for coordinated efforts and the leveraging of diverse strengths to drive collective progress.


"Building consensus is not only essential for economic progress but also for peace building and fostering mutual respect," Hon. Deputy Speaker Nazim said. He highlighted that through cooperation and dialogue, the region can navigate uncertainties and create a stable and peaceful environment for all.


Hon. Deputy Speaker Nazim referenced the policy of President Dr. Mohammed Muizzu, which emphasizes that consensus built on mutual respect is strengthened by harmonizing policies and facilitating trade. He pointed out that investing in infrastructure, technology, and education will enhance economic capabilities and ensure that the benefits of development are shared by all.


He also stressed the importance of including all regional stakeholders in the planning processes from the beginning to build a mutual sense of ownership and understanding.

"We need to learn from each other and adopt best practices to build resilient economies," Hon. Deputy Speaker Nazim remarked. He advocated for embracing green technologies and sustainable practices to withstand the challenges of time and climate change.


Reflecting on the Maldives' experience, Hon. Nazim noted that dialogue and cooperation in international relations can resolve conflicts and create pathways for development. He reaffirmed the Maldives' dedication to supporting a shared vision of a prosperous and peaceful South Asia.


In closing, Mr. Nazim expressed his confidence in the collaboration between South Asian nations and the People’s Republic of China, predicting a brighter and more prosperous future for the region.
