The Deputy Speaker of the People's Majlis, Honorable Ahmed Nazim, has departed for the United Kingdom to participate in this year's Executive Committee meeting of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA).
The Deputy Speaker of the Parliament will participate in this meeting as the representative of the Asia region on the CPA Executive Committee, which will be held in London, United Kingdom, from the 12th to 13th of this month.
This Executive Committee meeting is being held to discuss and make final decisions regarding the change in CPA's legal status that will occur this year.
The CPA, which was established in 1911, has been operating as a voluntary organization until now. However, on December 18, 2024, the UK Parliament passed a law, which received Royal Assent from the King of the United Kingdom on January 16 this year, changing the legal status of the CPA to an international organization. Additionally, another law granting further legal authority under this status is scheduled to be passed by the UK Parliament later this year. With the passing of this law, the CPA Secretariat will gain the status of participating in the activities of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) at the United Nations General Assembly.
During this visit of the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, a meeting with the Speaker of the House of Commons has also been arranged.
