Hon. Abdul Raheem Abdulla MP, Speaker of the People’s Majlis, addressed the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, held at Palais des Nations, United Nations Office at Geneva.

Speaking under the theme “A World in Turmoil: Parliamentary Cooperation and Multilateralism for Peace, Justice and Prosperity for All,” the Speaker reaffirmed the Maldives’ steadfast commitment to international cooperation, multilateralism, and parliamentary diplomacy.

During his speech, the Speaker highlighted the urgent global challenges faced today — from conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine to climate change and growing inequalities — emphasizing that small states like the Maldives are often the first to feel the impact. He also expressed the importance of a rules-based international order, justice for all, and collective action to achieve lasting peace and prosperity.

Hon. Speaker also called attention to the Maldives’ Climate Emergency Act and its ambitious target of net-zero emissions by 2030, urging stronger international support for vulnerable nations.

Highlighting the role of parliamentary diplomacy, the Hon. Speaker noted the establishment of over 25 parliamentary friendship groups in the Majlis and the Majlis’ active engagement with international bodies such as the IPU and CPA.

Addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the Speaker made a heartfelt plea for global parliamentary solidarity and swift multilateral action, declaring that silence and inaction are not options when lives are at risk.

The Hon. Speaker concluded his address by urging parliaments around the world to stand united in promoting peace, justice, and prosperity for all, and to work closely with the United Nations to ensure that the voice of the people shapes global decisions.
