Committee Meeting - People's Majlis of Maldives

Summary

The first item on today’s agenda was to review the individual sent by the president to appoint as a member of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives. Once the chairperson opened the floor to decide on a deadline for this matter, Mr. Mohamed Fazeel (Dhaandhoo Constituency) proposed to set 31^st July 2024 as the deadline for this Issue. This proposal was seconded by Mr. Mohamed Ali (Gadhdhoo Constituency).

The Second item on the agenda is record clearing. Once the chairman opened the floor, Mr. Mohamed Fazeel (Dhaandhoo constituency) proposed to request for clearance of records from Department of Judicial Administration, Elections Commission, Anti-Corruption Commission and the President’s office. This proposal was seconded by Mr. Hanaan Mohamed Rasheed (Guraidhoo Constituency).

As the third item on the agenda, the chairman opened the floor for suggestions on a date and the duration to open for public comments, under article 201 (d) in the standing order of the 19^th Majlis. Mr. Faruhath Mohamed (Kulhudhufushi Dhekunu Constituency) proposed to open for public comments from 17 July 2024 till 28^th July 2024 under article 201 (d) in the standing order of 19^th Majlis. It was seconded by Mr. Fazeel (Dhaandhoo Constituency).

As the fourth item on the agenda, the chairman opened the floor, to form an administrative panel to check the eligibility of the individual sent by the President as a Member of Human Rights Commission of the Maldives. Mr. Mohamed Fazeel (Dhaandhoo Constituency) proposed to form an administrative panel including Mr. Faruhath Habib (legal officer), Ms. Mariyam Hudha (Legal officer) and Aishath Abdul Hameed (legal officer). It was seconded by Mr. Faruhath Mohamed (Kulhudhufushi Dhekunu Constituency).

In addition, once the chairman opened the floor for suggestion on a date to interview the individual sent by the president for appointment, Mr. Mohamed Fazeel (Dhaandhoo Constituency) proposed to conduct the interview on 29^th July 2024. It was seconded by Mr. Hanaan Mohamed Rasheed (Guraidhoo Constituency).

The last item on today’s agenda was to meet a team from a ministry within the committee’s mandate, the Ministry of Social and Family development, to discuss their 2022 and 2023 annual reports.

In this meeting they shared a presentation about their 2022 and 2023 annual reports. In this presentation they shared information about their works in the last two years, details of their expenditures from the 2022 and 2023 budget, their efforts to further develop and strengthen their work and challenges faced in implementing it.

The team from the ministry also answered members’ questions on the challenges they faced in carrying out the responsibilities in their mandate.
