Summary
In today’s meeting committee met with officials of Ministry of Homeland security and technology, Ministry of Dhivehi language, culture and heritage and Ministry of Youth empowerment, information and Art regarding the amendment bill to the Act no. 23/2010 (The Copyright and related rights Act).
In this meeting, Minister of Homeland security and technology stated that the ministry’s main focus was to submit amendments to provisions on existing bill. However, the concepts of emerging technology such as AI technology and ChatGPT needs to be taken into consideration and needs to be further researched upon the new technology concepts. Therefore, the ministry needs two more weeks to look further into emerging technology concepts and possible provisions to the bill. Minister of Dhivehi language, culture and heritage stated that the ministry’s main focus regarding the existing amendment bill was to ensure that language, culture and heritage of the Maldives are safely passed on to future generations. The ministry also requires additional two more weeks to check for further provisions in relation to the culture and heritage. In addition Minister of Youth empowerment, information and Art also pointed out importance of a collective management organisation should be formed under this Act so that artist community could benefit from it.
After a meeting with the ministries on the bill, the committee discussed about the request made by the ministries. Kendhoo constituency member Mauroof Zakir proposed to give Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology, Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage and Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts two weeks time to submit further amendments to the Bill. It was seconded by North Feydhoo constituency member Ismail Nizar and was passed unanimously.
South Hithadhoo constituency member Ibrahim Nazil proposed to extend deadline to complete committee works of the bill to 15th August 2024. It was seconded by Kurendhoo constituency member Mohamed Shamin Habeeb and was passed unanimously.
