Summary
The agenda for today’s meeting was continuation of evaluating the Bill on Amendment to Employment Act (Act No: 2/2008). Each provision in the bill was read separately.
North Maafannu Constituency Member Mohamed Nazim proposed, and Maamigili Constituency Member Qaasim Ibrahim seconded to add the following statement at the end of section 65-5 (e) (4).“The deposit amount shall not exceed the cost of repatriation of the employee.” This proposal was passed by majority vote.
Hithadhoo Central Constituency Member Ahmed Azaan Marzooq proposed, and Hulhudhoo Constituency Member Mohamed Shaahidh seconded to keep the the clause 65-5 (i) as it is. This proposal was passed by majority vote.
After that, two proposals came on section 65-7 (a) (2).
- First Proposal: Central Hithadhoo Constituency Member Ahmed Azaan Marzooq proposed, and Hulhudhoo Constituency Member Mohamed Shaahidh seconded to keep the clause of MVR 50,000 Mvr fine as it is.
- Second Proposal: Maafannu Uthuru Constituency Member Mohamed Naazim and Maamigili Constituency Member Qasim Ibrahim seconded the proposal to set a range of MVR 5,000 to MVR 50,000 Mvr range for the fine instead of MVR 50,000 Mvr because it is too severe.
After discussions, the vote for the first proposal was passed with the majority vote including the committee chair.
It was then asked for a vote to pass the bill from the committee along with changes proposed and passed by the committee. The bill was passed by majority vote.
