In this meeting the committee met with Maldives Inland Revenue Authority’s (MIRA) officials regarding the authority’s 2022 and 2023 annual report and to further inquire about tax and non-tax dues amount. The Commissioner General of Taxation stated that his first priority was to strengthen the efforts to recover tax and non-tax dues to the state. In this regard discussions were carried out with 80 taxpayers with highest tax dues to formulate a plan and 57 taxpayers chose installment plan to pay back the tax dues. The total amount of tax and non-tax dues to the state is 17 billion rufiyaa, including tax dues of 8.2 billion rufiyaa and non-tax dues of 8.7 billion rufiyaa. He also stated that 2 billion rufiyaa was recovered in the past 5 months and the dues amount increased with the relief measures given during Covid-19. MIRA is focused on improving compliance level further more with changes in enforcement policies and also tax administrative act needs to be amended to further strengthen the enforcement and compliance of tax system.
