Committee on Environment and Climate Change

Committee on Environment and Climate Change 2nd Meeting 2025

25 Feb 2025 Number M20/M/EC/2025/2

Summary

The first item on today’s agenda was a meeting with Mainland Shipping Pvt. Ltd., regarding the issue of companies and individuals not paying environmental damage fines. Members of the committee inquired about their challenges and reasons for not paying these fines.

After concluding the segment with the Mainland Shipping Company, the committee chair opened the floor for members' suggestions. Maafannu West Constituency Member Mohamed Musthafa Ibrahim then proposed summoning representatives from the Ministry of Tourism and Environment once again, instead of those from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, as a letter from the Ministry of Tourism and Environment states that they did not discuss this matter with the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade and there were no prior discussions about measures that can be taken against companies that fail to pay these fines. Furthermore, he proposed summoning representatives from the Attorney General’s Office to further clarify the matter. This is because in the meeting with the shipping agency they claimed not to be liable for the fines.

Gemanafushi Constituency Member Asadhulla Shihab seconded that proposal but also suggested a new proposal with some changes.

He Proposed to summon all the relevant institutions, Ministry of Tourism and Environment, Environmental Protection Agency, Attorney General’s office and Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation together to the committee regarding the companies not paying environmental damage fines. It was seconded by Vilufushi constituency Member Hassan Waheed.

Hence, the members present in the meeting unanimously approved summoning representatives together from the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, Environmental Protection Agency, Attorney General’s office, and Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation to address the issue of companies not paying environmental damage fines.

The chairperson decided to summon representatives from the four mentioned institutions to the next committee meeting before concluding today’s meeting.
