Maldivian Parliament Shifts Online in Order to Continue Functioning During COVID-19 Crisis
The work of the People’s Majlis (Parliament of Maldives) shifted online, in order to allow the functions of the legislature to continue unimpeded during the COVID-19 crisis.
The first session of the People’s Majlis was held online today (Monday, 30 March 2020), using Microsoft Teams software. During today’s session, members debated on the Motion submitted to the parliament regarding the adverse effects to families and businesses due to the precautionary measures taken against the spread of Covid-19 pandemic.
Today’s session was chaired by Hon. President Mohamed Nasheed, MP, Speaker of the People’s Majlis and was attended by Seventy-One parliamentarians out of Eighty-Seven. The Members, who participated the sitting from their homes, followed standard Majlis protocol and spoke in turn. Online voting took place for the items on today’s agenda.
