The Library and Digital Archive of People’s Majlis has been inaugurated by His Excellency President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih during a ceremony held today at the People’s Majlis.
People’s Majlis library currently provides reference and information services, circulation services, photocopying services, and library orientation sessions for Parliament Members and secretariat of the People’s Majlis. The library has comfortable reading area and is equipped with computer terminals with internet access. The opening hours of the Library are from Sunday to Thursday: 8:30 – 13:30 hrs and during Ramadan, Sunday to Thursday: 9:30 – 12:30 hrs.
The library’s collections are divided into four main categories: General, Reference, Maldivian, and Special Collections. The special collections are further divided into Executive, Judiciary, Parliamentary and Independent Institution collection. These collections comprise of bibliographic, archival, legislative, legal, and statistical information mainly in the social science fields. These Collections can be browsed through the Library Catalogue. Users can borrow two items at a time from the general collection for a period of two weeks.
The digital archive collection consists of information on the history of Maldivian parliament, records of parliament sessions, presidential addresses, annual budget related documents etc. The archive can be browsed through the Digital Archive.
Though the Library of People’s Majlis was initially opened in 2006, due to the limited space and facilities, only a few services were provided at the time. However, the People’s Majlis was able to tackle these obstacles when the new building was opened. The People’s Majlis started to work towards digitalizing the books anddocuments in 2019 and will continue to work on improving the current services provided and on introducing new and better services in the Library and Archive section.
