The Speaker of People’s Majlis Address the 3rd Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network

The Speaker of People’s Majlis Hon. Mohamed Aslam addressed the 3rd Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network (NAM PN) held today in Geneva, Switzerland, on the sidelines of the 148th Assembly of the Inter-parliamentary Union (IPU).
During the discussions regarding Revitalizing Parliamentary Action in Combating Climate Action, The Speaker Hon. Mohamed Aslam stressed on the importance of such actions for the vulnerable and small island states such as the Maldives who are on the frontline of the climate crisis.
In his speech, the Speaker called on the world leaders and legislators to accelerate the transition to low-carbon economies, ensure equitable access to finance for renewable energy initiatives and facilitate the widespread adoption of sustainable technologies. The Speaker also mentioned enacting legislation that promotes sustainability, reduce greenhouse gases to achieve a more resilient and environmentally conscious future.
The Speaker also highlighted the steps taken at a national level to combat climate change and the deteriorating environment, such as setting ambitious national targets, making innovative policies in waste management and marine conservation and investments made in renewable energy infrastructure. The Speaker also stressed on the importance of parliamentary oversight and accountability in driving the effective implementation of climate policies and mentioned the establishment of a dedicated standing committee on Environment and Climate Change withing People’s Majlis which emphasizes the commitment of the Maldives to this cause.
In his speech, the Speaker called on world leaders and legislators to forge partnerships across borders and sectors, pool the resources, share knowledge, and amplify a collective impact to safeguard the future of the planet.
