The Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (AFPPD) convened its Sub-Regional Parliamentarians’ Meeting on Women Empowerment and Investment in Young People in South Asia, hosted by the Maldives from June 24-25.

Deputy Speaker of the People’s Majlis, Hon. Ahmed Nazim, delivered a keynote address, emphasizing the urgent need for inclusive policies to address demographic shifts and empower women and youth.

Speaking to parliamentarians and delegates, Hon. Nazim highlighted Maldives’ evolving demographics, citing the 2014 Census. By 2054, the population is projected to near one million, with 64% residing in Male’ due to urban migration. An aging population, with a median age rising from 17 to 37 years and life expectancy reaching 83, underscores the need for robust healthcare, mental health support, and gender-equitable policies. “Our growing workforce can drive progress, but only if we invest in youth, especially young women, with education, skills, and leadership roles,” Hon. Nazim stated.

Addressing a pressing challenge, Hon. Nazim raised the issue of brain drain, urging parliamentarians to act decisively. He said: “The Maldives faces a critical challenge with brain drain, as many of our brightest minds seek better opportunities abroad, depleting our nation’s human capital. To reverse this, we must reform our education, employment, and economic systems to create opportunities that retain and attract our best talent. The responsibility rests with us in the Majlis today to enact policies that foster innovation, enhance working conditions, and ensure a thriving future for our nation, transforming this brain drain into a brain gain for the Maldives.”

Building on this call for progress, Hon. Nazim praised the Maldives’ initiatives under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to foster sustainable development and community well-being. He highlighted the Happiness Maldives Program and the upcoming national Happiness Index, set for a 2026 pilot launch, as key steps toward enhancing quality of life. Hon. Nazim also celebrated Dr. Anara Naeem’s election to the AFPPD Executive Committee, noting it as a testament to Maldives’ global commitment to gender equality and mental health.

The meeting emphasized collaboration with civil society to amplify marginalized voices and craft innovative legislation, aiming for a future where women lead and youth thrive.
